PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, (CMC) – Opener Tyrone Theophile stroked a better than run-a-ball half-century but his enterprise was not enough as Windward Islands Volcanoes found themselves under pressure ahead of yesterday’s third day of the day/night first round game in the Regional Four-Day Championship. On Saturday’s second day at Queen’s Park Oval, Volcanoes got the worse of the exchanges, conceding a first innings lead of 100 runs and then losing late wickets to end on 135 for four in their second innings – only 35 runs ahead.
The right-handed Theophile carved out his 12th first half-century with an attractive 55 and Jerlani Robinson chipped in with 33 but both perished after they were well set, to leave Volcanoes needing a massive effort in order to win the contest.
Earlier, Jason Mohammed struck his 10th first class half-century as Red Force, resuming the day on 139 for five, were dismissed for 242 just over an hour after lunch.
The right-hander, unbeaten on 30 overnight, made 70, and received support from the enterprising debutant Roshon Primus who followed up his six-wicket haul with an unbeaten 36.
Mohammed faced 95 balls and struck ten fours, spearheading a 74-run, sixth wicket stand with wicketkeeper Katwaroo whose 30 came from 84 balls and included a four and a six.
Once Mohammed fell, however, Red Force lost their last five wickets for 50 runs, even as Primus eked out precious runs at the end with two fours and a six in a 76-ball knock.
Shane Shillingford failed to add to his tally, claiming three for 53 while fellow off-spinner Liam Sebastien (2-27), along with seamers Mervin Matthew (2-47) and Delorn Johnson (2-61), all finished with two wickets each.
Volcanoes then got a strong start from Theophile and veteran left-hander Devon Smith (19) as they reached the tea interval on 39 without loss.
The pair put on 55 for the first wicket before Smith fell in the fourth over following the resumption, bowled by a full length delivery from left-arm speedster Sheldon Cottrell.
Theophile, who faced a mere 48 deliveries and counted ten fours, added a further 23 with Robinson before eventually departing, bowled by Primus.
Still, the visitors were 91 for two on the stroke of the final hour but the wickets of Narsingh Deonarine (5) and Robinson, saw the advantage tilt Red Force’s way.
