Windies captain Holder steers clear of contracts issue

WEST Indies captain Jason Holder has refused to be drawn into the recent player retainer contract debate claiming he will instead focus on positivity and leading the team on the pitch.Last week it was revealed that three of the regional team’s key players, Marlon Samuels, Carlos Brathwaite and Darren Bravo had refused retainers from the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).
The decision cast doubt on the future of the players in the regional set-up, with Samuels, one of the team’s most senior players, Brathwaite the newly appointed T20 captain and Bravo one of its most promising batsmen all thought of as key components.
Holder has insisted there is very little to be done from his perspective.
As I’ve said about all the negative things around West Indies cricket, those things are basically beyond my control,” said Holder.
“I can’t control who signs contracts, I can’t control who’s here with me. All I can control is my destiny on the cricket field when I step over that line, and that goes for everybody in the dressing room,” he added.
“Us players have to be responsible for our own individual actions (and) take our own personal pride onto the cricket field and control cricket,” he pointed out.
“At the end of the day, that’s the only thing we can control, and at the end of the day, cricket will be here to stay, and it’s been here before us. So for me we just go out there and control (what we can) by playing good cricket.”(Sportsmax.com)
