TTFA to drop Soca Warriors name

THE Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) will officially no longer use the name ‘Soca Warriors’ to describe its national team. The decision comes in the wake of successful legal action from veteran sports broadcaster Selwyn Melville whose attorney successful y filed a pre-action protocol letter issued to the body three weeks ago.
The TTFA and Melville have been at loggerheads over the ‘Soca Warriors’ trademark for the last several years with the broadcaster making claims he came up with the term “Soca Warriors” 18 years ago and is seeking US$30 million for its use by the local football organisation.
Following a meeting held by the TTFA recently, the body, according to the T&T Newsday, has decided the name will no longer be used. Last month the TTFA had stated that the name had not been dropped after press releases from the organisation referred to the team as “Red Army”.
The association, however, despite removing it from the website insisted a release would not be sent out as it would have not have the right to tell fans or members of the media to not used the name.(Sportsmax.com)
