EYEWITNESSES have said that the driver of Mazda motor car PTT 5087 was speeding when his vehicle hit Toyota motor car PMM 2954 on the East Bank Demerara (EBD) carriageway in the vicinity of Herstelling, causing it to flip several times. One vehicle ended up turned turtle in a nearby drain while the other lay toppled on its side. The cars were both heading in a southerly direction; and while Vishnu Rampersaud, driver of Toyota PMM 2954, escaped without a scratch, the driver of Mazda PTT 5087 had to be rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Fortunately, the other four occupants of that vehicle, which included a child, escaped unhurt.

Detailing the events leading up to the accident, Rampersaud said he had left the Demerara Harbour Bridge, heading towards Diamond, EBD; and in the vicinity of the police station, he saw a vehicle in his rear view mirror approaching at a very fast.

“By the time I look back in the mirror, the man lash my vehicle from the back, causing my vehicle to topple two times, landing on the top. By the time I come out of my vehicle, people in the area tell me the driver run away,” Rampersaud said. He added: “I was wearing my seat belt, and I thank God I wasn’t hurt. I am thankful.”

An occupant of the Mazda said she did not know what exactly had happened.
