Two persons are on Monday expected to be charged with robbery/murder in relation to the killing of a father of one by bandits when they stormed a Herstelling, East Bank Demerara home on Thursday last, police say.
Police have arrested a 21-year-old man, who is renting the lower flat of the two-storey house where the robbery occurred, and a close relative of the dead man. The two were identified on Saturday during a police ID parade.
Abdool Ameer Subrati, 43, of Lot 21 Back Street, Peter’s Hall, EBD, succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack while undergoing surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC).
Last Thursday, five armed bandits stormed the home of a relative of Subrati’s, where three overseas-based Guyanese were staying. Subrati reportedly resisted the bandits and was shot to the neck. This newspaper understands that the bullet ricocheted to his spine and punctured his lung in the process.
“This robbery/murder at Herstelling will be solved…. A law enforcement process that was just concluded…we have been able to solve this case. The disturbing thing about this robbery/murder is that people who you thought were trusted are involved. They dined, confabulated with them every day, and had a close relationship with the person involved,” acting Police Commissioner David Ramnarine told reporters on Saturday.
Reports are that Subrati’s brother, wife and daughter arrived in Guyana on Tuesday last, and had planned a family reunion at the Herstelling property. Shortly after guests left, the five bandits, two of whom were armed, pounced on the family. The gunmen, hiding in a bathroom in the back yard, escaped on foot with the visitors’ passports, money, jewellery and other personal items.
A relative said that before the robbery occurred, the tenant and his wife, who lived in the lower flat, packed their belongings and moved out.
“After the robbery, they came back to check and see what happened. When we come back from the hospital, we see them here. This man does have all sort of thieves and drug smokers coming to him,” the relative said.
