CHIEF Executive Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), Errol Hanoman says paddy cultivation at the Wales Estate will soon begin. He told the Guyana Chronicle that GuySuCo is working closely with the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) to get the pilot project off the ground as soon as possible.
The closure of the estate has attracted some criticism regarding the future of workers, and according to Hanoman, that matter is yet to be decided but a pronouncement will be made soon.

GuySuCo through its Engineering Services Department is inviting sealed bids for the clearing of some 485 acres of lands at the Wales Estate to facilitate rice cultivation.
Meanwhile, in an advertisement in this newspaper, GuySuCo said the lands are required to be cleared of all vegetation to facilitate laser land levelling for rice cultivation.
Agriculture Minister Noel Holder said there are talks about the GRDB wanting to explore the cultivation of Aromatic Rice.
But this, he said was still being deliberated between the GRDB and GuySuCo.
The land is new to rice cultivation and Holder believes that the possibilities for success are high.
