Williams, Crawford occupy podium places at Tobago Cycling Classic

GUYANA’s national road race champion Geron Williams and fellow Guyanese Romello Crawford found themselves on the podium in the 2016 edition of the Tobago Cycling Classic which concluded on Saturday in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.According to reports, Williams, Guyana’s only professional cyclist, competing for Team Foundation of the United States,placed second overall after placing ninth in the first leg on Tuesday last, third in the third leg on Friday and third again in the final leg on Saturday.
Crawford on the other hand, representing Team PSL of Trinidad and Tobago,placed second overall in the Division Two category after placing second to Team Southclaine’s Jabari Whiteman of Trinidad in the 20-lap race on Saturday.
CRL’s Arno Van Der Zwet of the Netherlands won the Overall Division One title after riding consistently throughout the four-stage event and placing fourth in the final leg (60 laps) on Saturday. The final stage was contested around Market Square-Wilson Road.
Williams’ team Foundation teammate Norlandy Sanchez of the Dominican Republic edged him (Williams) to win the final leg, but Williams’ performance throughout the four-day event earned him the podium spot ahead of Sanchez in the overall standing.
Jamaican Marlo Rodman,who won the overall title last year and was tipped to make a repeat this year,was nowhere among the top four overall finishers.
He won the 60-lap criterium on Friday, finishing ahead of his PSL team-mate Nick Stopler of Netherlands and Williams (Guyana/Team Foundation).
