GUYANA’s National road race champion Geron Williams had to settle for third in the 2016 edition of the Tobago Cycling Classic which culminated yesterday in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.Williams,after resting on Thursday,after two days of competition, could not hold off last year’s champion and the eventual winner of Friday’s leg of the Classic series, Jamaican Marloe Rodman who found the form he showed last year.

It has been reported that Rodman, representing Team PSL, made good use of Thursday’s rest day as he came out with energy to win the Plymouth Criterium ,which saw the cyclists pedal for 65km (50 laps) in divison one. Rodman, who won the four stage Tobago Classic last year, finished ahead of Nick Stopler (second) of the Netherlands and Williams, respectrively.
The overall leader heading into yesterday’s final stage was Dutchman Arno Van Der Zwet of Team PSL, while Stopler is second overall and Oscar Pachon (Colombia/Team Cocos) is third.
Williams,Guyana’s only professional cyclist and riding for Team Foundation of the U.S, along with other Guyanese – Raynauth `Obeahman’ Jeffrey, Hamzah Eastman, and Jamal John – was scheduled to contest the fourth and final leg of the event yesterday,which is a 60-lap Criterium around the Market Square at Wilson Road in Scarborough.
Jeffrey, Eastman and John are all representing different teams and it should be noted that the Guyanese are not a national unit.
Other Guyanese that were expected to be in action yesterday were Jebon and Romello Crawford ,who contested the Division Two category and were down to contest a 20 lap/20km criterium.
Riders from Colombia, Germany, Netherlands, Dominican Republic, Sweden, Venezuela, France, Antigua, Cuba, Martinique, Canada, Jamaica, Argentina, USA, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados and Denmark participated in the annual event.
