AFTER serving for close to a year as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Guyana National Newspapers Limited (GNNL), Jean La Rose tendered her resignation to Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo on September 23, 2016.In her letter, La Rose stated that her resignation will take effect on October 1, 2016 and cited work commitments as the main reason for her decision.
“At this point, I feel that I am not contributing to the further development of the Board or of GNNL as I may have done if I had more time to dedicate towards fully understanding my role as Chair or as a Director.
“With the coming into office of the new government, more opportunities and spaces to work with and on behalf of indigenous communities in Guyana has ground resulting in the expansion of my work commitments and less time to dedicate to issues of the GNNL. I have therefore not been functioning in this capacity at my highest level,” La Rose stated in her resignation letter.
La Rose is a key leader in the Amerindian struggle for full rights to traditional lands. She has served as the Programme Administrator of the Amerindian People’s Association (APA).
She described her tenure at GNNL as a learning experience which helped her to grow. “The GNNL is in a good position for further growth and I wish you and all involved much success in upcoming initiatives.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nagamootoo in his response, stated that he accepted the resignation “with a heavy heart but understand your reasons for doing so.”
The Prime Minister said that he recommended La Rose for the position as Chair with a sense of pride, “both as an outstanding womon and as a champion of a cause of promoting human rights in general and the interest of our indigenous peoples in particular.”
He thanked La Rose for her efforts to resuscitate GNNL as a national newspaper and to improve professionalism among employees.
