BEVERAGE giant Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) is still on board the Kennard Memorial Turf Club’s (KMTC) horse race meets and, according to their representative, the company will continue supporting the KMTC as long as possible.The meet is scheduled for Sunday at the Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club, Bush Lot Farm, Corentyne, Berbice and will commence at 13:00hrs.
The DDL sponsorship of the first place trophy and prize money will go towards the winner of the Class `D 1 and Lower seven-furlong race which carries a first prize of the DDL trophy and $1M.
The second-, third- and fourth-place finishers will earn $500 000, $250 000 and $125 000 respectively.
Yesterday, Chairman of the Police Complaints Authority and president of the KMTC, Justice Cecil Kennard received a cheque for an undisclosed amount as well as the first place trophy for the winner of the Class `D and Lower event from Demerara Distillers Limited’s Wines and Spirits Brand Manager Maria Munroe, at his Brickdam office.
Munroe in brief remarks said her company is pleased to be associated with the KMTC’s race meets and will continue to support the club since its administrators act in a transparent manner and organise some thrilling races throughout the years.
This will be DDL’s 43rd year of sponsorship to the KMTC and the third event that her company will be part-sponsoring for the year.
According to Munroe, a former national women’s hockey captain, DDL will also be part-sponsoring the KMTC’s Boxing Day meet to be held at the Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club, Corentyne Berbice.
On accepting the cheque and trophy from Munroe, Justice Kennard thanked DDL once again for its continued support and said he is confident that the company (DDL) will continue its support to his club in the future.
Justice Kennard informed that the KMTC’s facility is in excellent condition and horses registered for Sunday’s meet have been galloping at the track for the past weeks.
Registration closed yesterday and at the point of closing, over 65 horses were registered.
Eight races are carded for race day and will be highlighted by the feature `D1 and Lower race.
When action gets underway at 13:00hrs, the horses in the L W/A (non-winners) category will take to the track in a race over five furlongs for a top prize of $120 000.
There will also be heated action in the D3 Maiden and E and Lower Open category over seven furlongs. The winner of that event will be $600 000 richer.
The H1 & Lower event over seven furlongs has a winning purse of $240 000, while the race for L (W/A) category will see the owner of the winning horse take home $120 000.
The two-year-olds Guyana-bred race has a winning tag of $200 000, while G1 and Lower and J1 and Lower race winners will receive $280 000 and $180 000 respectively.
Horse owners are reminded that the meet is being conducted under the aegis of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA) and all applicable rules will be enforced.
