Dear Editor,
I am very happy to see that stall holders/vendors in Georgetown have organised themselves, as was hinted a few weeks ago by the consummate humanitarian and AFC Chairman, Nigel Hughes. What I find impressive about their organisation is that they have formed a trade union and have chosen a strong leader in Eon Andrews – who is honest, articulate, loyal, and obviously a visionary. I have seen Eon Andrews portray these traits as a councillor making his presentations at City Council’s statutory meetings during the life of the previous council.
One has to possess special skills, coupled with an acute intellect, to organise and develop the legal framework to formally unionise workers in the informal sector such as minibus service providers, and to do it again with stall holders/vendors. Unionising workers from two of the most contentious informal workers groupings in Guyana (minibus operators and stall holders/vendors) is deserving of a national award.
