Twenty wheelchairs were donated recently to persons in Berbice by the St. Francis Community Developers in partnership with Food for the Poor Guyana. The presentations were done by Alex Foster to the family members of those who are in needs of the chairs.

According to Foster the wheelchairs are from Food for the Poor, who last year received a donation from Free Wheelchair Mission in the United States who supports wheelchairs to people around the world.

He further explained that Food for the Poor previously donated a total of 50 wheelchairs per year, however that has been increased with over 500 wheelchairs coming to Guyana last year alone, all of which were handed out.

Due to the overwhelming response another shipment of 500 came earlier this year, which are currently being distributed across the country.

Foster told the Guyana Chronicle that he is very happy to be able to assist persons. “We are happy to be a part of and work with Food for the Poor to help persons in this region to acquire wheelchairs so that persons can be able to move a little freer and can be able to have some level of normalcy.”

With the sizeable donation of chairs made, Foster is also calling on the relevant authorities to be cognizant of the fact that there are a lot of people who utilise the wheelchairs as their means of mobility and systems need to be put in place to facilitate them, especially at government offices and major businesses.
