PLAYING some tight drop shots and deep cross-court, Guyana’s Priyanna Ramdhani smashed her way to Girls’ singles while Narayan Ramdhani also made it into the Boys’ doubles quarter-finals when matches of the Pan American Junior Badminton Championships continued on Wednesday in Peru. Playing in high altitude, cold conditions of Peru’s winter, Guyana’s Pan American four-time medallist Priyanna Ramdhani again performed at her best as she took down the lanky Pinillos in a two-game match.
In the first game Priyanna came back from being 2 points down to take the lead. The match was 3-all before Priyanna once again took the lead. The two traded points until the game finally ended 21-18 in Ramdhani’s favour.
The second game saw Priyanna maintain her stamina, as she battled against Pinillos and the prevailing conditions. The national champion kept up, but played a close game coming back from behind again and setting the game to a level 20-all, before earning another two points to win the match 22-20. During this game Pinillos was slapped with a yellow card for indiscipline against Priyanna.
In the Boys’ doubles Narayan Ramdhani and Shea Martin made it into the quarterfinals after taking out the Mexican team of Ailton Josue Correa Martinez and his partner Francisco Rafael Trevino Buenrostro.
As the tournament continued yesterday Narayan and Martin were set to challenge Ricky Liuzhou and Cadmus Yeo of USA.
Priyanna was also scheduled to take on number two seed Sharon Au of Canada in the Girls’ singles and was set to team up with Sara Michelle Barrios versus the number one seeded team of Sharon Au & Rebecca Lee in the Girls’ doubles.
Guyans’s participation at the Championships was made possible through the sponsorship of the Guyana Olympics Association, the National Sports Commission, Mr Yesu Persaud of Demerara Bank, Mr Philip DaSilva, Mr Neville Osman and Continental Group of Companies (SUNBURST).
