GUYANA’S national U-17 footballers were humbled 4-1 by Jamaica when the two sides met, yesterday, in the opening match of Group four in the CFU’s Preliminary group competition being played in St Thomas, USVI.The young Guyanese footballers held their own in the first half and went in at the break level at 1-1, thanks to a 31st minute equaliser by Canadian-born Roberto Case after the Jamaicans took the lead in the 16th minute of play.
The more organised and better prepared Jamaicans took full control of the second period as the Guyanese wilted physically and conceded three unanswered goals at the Lionel Roberts Stadium.
During the second period defender Cosmos De Santos had to leave the field and was taken to a hospital after a clash that injured his right knee. Reports are that all is well and DeSantos is expected to be in the starting line-up for the next engagement.
Guyana will be aiming to restore some pride in their next fixture against the home side tomorrow, before playing their final Group 4 match on Tuesday against Antigua and Barbuda.
