AN Environment and Sustainable Committee was formed at an Extraordinary Statutory Meeting of the Mayor and City Council and Town Clerk Royston King said such a committee is necessary, even as the Council seeks to advance the status of the Georgetown municipality.He notes also that even as Georgetown evolves, new challenges would confront the city and the Council must be prepared to address these challenges.

King made specific reference to the discovery of oil and gas offshore Guyana. He noted that the Council must be environmentally prepared to address all new and current environmental challenges.

The committee would be responsible for giving the Council general and specific advice on environmental matters and also making recommendations on environmental issues

According to King, the committee is charged with the responsibility of addressing various environmental health concerns.
Meanwhile, Public Relations Officer (ag) Debra Lewis said the new committee will also assist in the implementation of measures and systems that will improve the quality of life, the livability, and the working environment for the residents, visitors and businesses in the city. It will utilise an integrated approach to address the principles of sustainability and sound environmental practice in all municipal operations and activities.

The committee would focus on environmental issues, including solid waste management (garbage, recycling, and composting), water conservation, environmental stewardship, water quality, air quality, open spaces, landscaping, energy conservation, climate change and global warming and its impact on the development of the city of Georgetown.
The committee will provide advice and recommendations in the following areas: existing or proposed by-laws, policies, procedures, and practices related to the protection and enhancement of the environment, as well as compliance with the environmental goals and objectives established by the City Council.

GREENHOUSE GAS REDUCTION
The committee would be responsible also for the development of a strategy for the city’s greenhouse gas reduction.
Mayor Patricia Chase-Greene will chair this committee and the other members are Oscar Clarke, Monica Thomas, Lynda Gomes-Haley, Junior Garrett, Heston Bostwick, Carolyn Caesar and Winston Harding.
