THE owner of the container found with 1,276 pounds of compressed marijuana at the John Fernandes Wharf, Water Street, is assisting with investigations. Anti-narcotics agents on Monday unearthed the marijuana in the container which was shipped to these shores with heavy-duty machinery last month. The container arrived in Guyana on May 16 on board the vessel “MC Fouma” from the United States.
Since then, Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) officials had been monitoring movement of the vessel. The vessel made one stop in Jamaica before proceeding here. Investigators believe that the container was tampered with while in Jamaica or en route to Guyana.
From all appearances, the source noted that the narcotics may have been shipped by persons familiar with the drug trade here. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
