THE Guyana Oil Company Limited (Guyoil) has partnered with the Tradewind Tankers and collaborated with the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) of the Covent Garden Primary School, East Bank Demerara, to construct a Music and Art Room as a gift to the school in celebration of that school’s 50th anniversary of existence. At a simple sod-turning ceremony on Wednesday, Chairman of the PTA, Junior Cornette, extended his gratitude to the company for taking on the project so that students could have their own space for music and art.
Managing Director (ag) of Guyoil, Reggie Bhagwandin, in brief remarks, noted that Guyoil and Tradewind Tankers believe that completing this project is a fitting gesture to the school, since the occasion also commemorates Guyana’s 50th independence anniversary.
Bhagwandin said the project would be completed within the next four weeks, and at a cost of just over $2M.
The cornerstone of the Covent Garden Primary School was laid on May 26, 1966, and the school was built by residents of that community as an independence project, to accommodate students in the community rather than have them travelling some distance to attend the Providence Primary School.
The Ministry of Education has reinforced music as an important aspect of a child’s overall development.
