A REPEAT offender and his common-law wife were nabbed with 14lbs of marijuana after police made a surprise visit at a Percy Smith Street, East Canje residence on Independence Night, May 26.Police on mobile patrol visited the house where they saw the female companion sitting beneath the house. She was asked to call her common- law husband and when he appeared, the cops requested that he accompany them on a search of his home.
The Guyana Chronicle understands that in the first bedroom, several parcels wrapped in plastic were seen in two black bulky plastic bags. When opened, the parcels contained leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be portions of the cannabis plant.
Further, a second bedroom was searched and it unearthed a tarpaulin under the mattress which also contained suspected ganja. The couple was arrested and taken to the Reliance Police Station, where the suspected narcotic was weighed in their presence and it amounted to 14 lbs. They remain in custody and are expected to appear before a magistrate during next week.
Meanwhile, the male defendant currently faces a charge of trafficking in a narcotic. He also faces a robbery-under-arms charge committed on New Amsterdam businessman Mohamed Ali, who was robbed of $2.5M as he was about to make a deposit at the Scotia Bank in New Amsterdam on August 4, 2014. Further, he was charged with robbery committed on Indernauth Bishram, called “Ajay,” of Sun Shine Supermarket and Poultry Supplies of Public Road, Cumberland, East Canje Berbice of $1.3M on April 28, 2014.
