MANY men have sought to claim glory on successes and oftentimes forget those who assisted them on their path down that road. That isn’t the case, however, of Stephen Vieira, as he laid the praise of his Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) 2016 victories at the feet of his team’s Pure Racing, headed by Andrew Phang.
Speaking exclusively to Chronicle sport in Jamaica this week, the 2015 runner-up and 2016 challenger contended, “It was actually a very good weekend and it was a good weekend for us. I have to thank Andy (Andrew Phang) and his wife for supporting me and helping me to get my bike sorted out.”
Vieira, who stormed to the lead of the 2016 edition of the Championships after the first round last weekend at the Jamwest Raceway, continued, “Me and Andy are in talks right now to develop the bike much better; we had some issues last weekend.”
With two wins from three races, the veteran, a multiple Caribbean Champion has amassed a total of 68 points on exit from Jamaica and hopes to carry that momentum back home and hopefully to Round 2 in Trinidad in just over ten weeks.
“I like speed, any track with a good speed I’m on it. I think my edge over the competition this weekend was race experience, that’s the truth,” the Kawasaki ZX6-R Rider told Chronicle Sport.
Though it’s safe to say that he has conquered what is racing at Jamwest, and with his focus re-shifting to the Wallerfield in Trinidad, the Guyanese admitted that there is still one feat he is yet to achieve across the Caribbean.
That is the current CMRC superbike lap record, reset last weekend by holder Elliot Vieira with a blistering 1:11.110 time.
“I want to break a lap record. Actually, my little cousin (Elliot V) is doing well with the lap record; I can’t win everything. I would like to thank my sponsors Sunburst Orange Juice, Seaboard Marine and Fly Jamaica for an amazing weekend,” he concluded.
