PRESIDENT David Granger has met with Commonwealth Secretary General Baroness Patricia Scotland at the United Nations Headquarters, where last Friday they both attended the signing ceremony of the historic Paris Agreement.President Granger took the opportunity to again congratulate the Baroness on her appointment as the new Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations, and wished her a successful tenure.

During the meeting with the Baroness, the President spoke of the significance of her appointment, coming as she did from a small island developing state, since the Commonwealth itself is made up of mainly small states.

A release said the President also noted the coincidence of their meeting on the margins of the signing of the Paris Agreement, which is a global response to climate change — a phenomenon that is of great concern to all countries of the world, but particularly to small-island developing states (SIDS).

SIDS are particularly prone to the threat of rising sea levels caused by climate change.

Deodat Maharaj, Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth; and Ram Venuprasad, Deputy Head of the Office of the Secretary General, had accompanied the Baroness to the meeting with President Granger.
