ALTHOUGH Alpha United’s position as the number one football club in Guyana is being questioned on a daily basis by some football pundits, head coach Wayne` Wiggy’ Dover is unperturbed by the queries.`The Hammer’ as Alpha is known, has found the going rough in recent times, especially when playing against West Demerara club Slingerz.
“The records are there to show that we are the most dominant club in the country. We have proven that. At present, Alpha United has no point to prove but will continue to play the best brand of football we are capable of,” Dover told Chronicle Sport yesterday.
“I think that sometimes we get mixed up with a team that has temporarily found form or one that has temporarily lost it. Alpha United has, in recent times, shown levels of inconsistency. However, I think that we are now settling in again as performance in our last two games has shown.”
`The Hammer’ trounced GFC 5-0 and roughed up Monedderlust 3-1 in their last two games. “My opinion is that even though it’s the latter stages of this competition, Alpha United is settling in nicely. The door is still wide open as once we are in the top four, then we are into the semi- finals,” Dover declared.
Alpha United is currently third on the Stag Elite League Finale points table with 20 points. They trail leader Slingerz on 30 points and Fruta Conquerors on 25. `The Hammer is set to battle nemesis Slingerz tomorrow at the GDF ground.
The two local football gladiators have played each other four times in the Stag competition with Slingerz winning three of the encounters with the other ending in a draw. “At present, Slingerz are the best playing side in the competition. Until Alpha United is still number one until we are dethroned.”
