Dear Editor,
SUNDAY, 3rd April, 2016 was a historic day for cricket, particularly for the people of the Caribbean. It is a day we will always remember. At the beginning of the World T/20 Tournament for both Women and Men, no matter how a die-hard West Indian Cricket fan you were, you would not have betted a substantial amount of money on both our teams winning the trophies; but they have done so in style. One may be very good at assembling words, but would find it difficult to describe the feeling of our players, the fans and management of the teams, not forgetting the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) officials.
Our players have taken their game to a level we have not witnessed since the days of Clive Lloyd and his all-conquering team. Never in the history of West Indian Cricket have we experienced so much joy on any given day or period.
It all started with our Under-19 Team at the limited overs World Tournament, when, against the odds, they beat India, who were clear favourites before the matches began. And on Sunday, 03.04.2016, our Women’s and Men’s teams did the same in style. It is unprecedented in the history of cricket.
We must now not become complacent, but must transform our success to the longer format of the game. I believe it can happen; I a dreaming that it would happen; but it will, of course, take some time.
With this level of success, it would of course serve as inspiration to the players, the various boards (regional boards), the WICB, and also the West Indies Players Association to take their responsibilities more seriously and go to a higher level like the players, so that we, the people of the Caribbean and elsewhere, would experience many more days like Sunday, 3rd April, 2016.
The disappointment, the anguish, and for many of us the pain we endured in the past as West Indian Cricket fans were very intense at times, but we nevertheless stood our ground and rallied around our team; something we must always do, so our joy and glorious period would not be short lived.
Congratulations to our Under-19 Team, and to our Men’s and Women’s teams! May God bless you.
Yours sincerely,
ARCHIE W. CORDIS
