Guyana Police Force Police Special Constable 14536 Akeem Hyles has died following a boat accident in the Amatuk Falls area, Potaro River on Friday. The Guyana Chronicle understands that Hyles, who was attached to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU), was among a team of Joint Services personnel and officials of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) in a boat in the Amatuk Falls area when the vessel capsized.
His body has not yet been recovered and a search is in progress. According to a police report, Special Constable Hyles had departed Ogle Airport Friday morning with other ranks who were dispatched to assist the GGMC officials in dealing with illegal mining in the Kaieteur National Park area.
The Guyana Police Force has extended sincere condolences to the parents, relatives and friends of Constable Hyles.
According to reports, although Constable Hyles was a good swimmer, the murky waters of the Potaro River were a challenge for him, and he was swallowed up by the river.
At his home at Lot 41 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, his mother Carol Hyles was seated on her back stairs with eyes puffed and tears flowing slowly down her face. She recalled her conversation with the last of her seven children.
“He came home on Wednesday and he asked me what I wanted for my birthday on April 24th. I said a microwave oven or an ice cream can. He subsequently left, but not before telling his sister Donette (Hyles) that he has to go into the bush (interior), and he was not too keen on going, as it was ‘bush, bush, bush all the time’. On Thursday evening he sent $20,000 with a car driver,” the grieving mother said.
Interjecting, his only sister Donette recalled her brother calling her a few minutes before he departed Ogle, saying that he was leaving for six days, and on his return he would be requesting a few days off.
Donette said she was shocked when one of her brother’s colleagues called home Friday afternoon, asking whether she heard from her brother recently.
“I asked him what happen and he told me of what he heard. But I did not believe, and demanded that he confirm the report. He did seconds later,” she recounted.
The family said Berbice Commander, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam, and other police ranks have visited and offered their condolences.
Hyles had attended Trinity Street Primary School, The Business School, Dar-ul-Salam College and the New Amsterdam Technical Institute before joining the Guyana Police Force six years ago.
He leaves to mourn his mother Carol and his siblings: Junior, Michael, Maxwell, Kester, Paul and Donette Hyles.
