A FORMER Police Prosecutor on Thursday found herself on the wrong side of the law when she appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, charged with accepting bribes.Suzette Cornett, a serving member of the Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) and a retired police officer, is accused of accepting money from Andrew Fung on four occasions to withhold a charge of simple larceny against him.
Cornett allegedly took from Fung more than $500,000 in cash, plus a Samsung television, between February 20 and 24 in Georgetown. The 54-year-old denied the accusation; while her lawyer, Lyndon Amsterdam, explained that she had 30 years of service in the Guyana Police Force before she retired in 2012.
The lawyer claimed the charges against his client were trumped-up, and asked that she be released on bail. As such, bail was granted in the sum of $100,000, and Cornett is scheduled to return to court on April 26. [Celestine Juan]
