A 27-YEAR-OLD man yesterday made a dramatic appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, charged with robbing an elderly security guard after allegedly raping her.“I’m wrongfully accused! …is better y’all kill me!” were the shouts of Samuel David George when he was being escorted into the courtroom of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
George broke down in tears, threw himself on the floor of the prisoners’ dock and started to pray, all the time whispering “The blood of Jesus.”
Police officers tried to restrain the prisoner, but he refused to be restrained, and started to hit himself. However, he stopped when the magistrate entered.
The court heard that on March 28 at East Ruimveldt, he robbed a 60-year-old security officer of her $5,000 cellular phone along with $18,000 in cash. He was not required to plead to the charge.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones strongly opposed George being released on bail, and pointed out that the accused had a charge of rape pending against him.
Jones also noted that while George told the court that he resides at Lot ‘A’ East Ruimveldt Squatting Area, he had given the police lot 600 East Ruimveldt as a conflicting address.
The chief magistrate refused George bail and remanded him until April 14, when he is scheduled to make his second appearance.
While George was leaving the court in the prison van for the Camp Street jail, family members of the victim shouted taunts at him. One person, identified as a daughter, said she hoped the prisoners would rape him “like how he rape meh mudda.” She intoned, “Yuh nah shame? She is an old woman.”
All the while, George stared blankly at them. Then, as the prison vehicle drove off, George screamed at the family: “The blood of Jesus pon y’all!”
According to reports, on Monday, March 28, the victim was in her guard hut at a Day Care Centre in Georgetown when the suspect allegedly broke in and beat the 60-year-old woman then robbed her before raping her twice. The ordeal is said to have lasted over 35 minutes.
The victim was ordered to walk to the ballfield in the Day Care compound, but fortunately for her, a nearby resident heard the commotion and came out just in time to rescue the elderly woman.
George was later arrested by police as he tried to change his appearance by cutting his hair.
