UG preparing for UWI Invitational Meet

UNIVERSITY of Guyana students are in preparation for next weekend’s West Indies (UWI) Track and Field Invitational Meet set to take place on Saturday, April 2.The meet, which will feature some of the top Jamaican athletes, will see the University of Guyana sending a 15-member team to participate during the meet, which is set for the UWI/ Usain Bolt Track.
Speaking recently, the university’s sport organiser, Lavern Fraser, said that her team of athletes have trained hard for the meet and expected to deliver hardware, adding, “the team basically is gelling.”
“I’m really quite happy about the kind of preparation we have put in for our participation and I’m certain that we will certainly be able to give a good account of ourselves and we will bring back some medals,” continued the sport coordinator.
According to the sport organiser, the unit is a seasoned one that is seasoned in travelling, saying, “Most of the athletes I can say are seasoned University of Guyana athletes, because they have travelled before as a group.”
She added, “They have been practising well. Last year they went to the Cave Hill meet in Barbados, and they were able to bring back 10 medals, so we’re really looking forward to a really good performance.”
Since its inception in 2001, the UWI invitational has over the years attracted top names, such as Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, with participating countries in this year’s event featuring the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago.
The team members are Emanuel Archibald, Kezia Bess, Kleon Spellen, Cleveland Forde, Floyd Phillips, Dane Johnson, Vanessa Shelto, Ameer Yussuf, Salim Yussuf, Owen Adonis, Delroy Austin and Travis Poole
