Under-16 boxers for two-day camp

THIRTY-FIVE Under-16 boxers representing six gyms are set to converge on the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis gym in Georgetown to participate in a two-day training camp, organised by the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association.The camp comes at a time when the GABA is stepping up preparation for the Caribbean’s first International Schoolboys and Junior’s tournament scheduled to be held in Guyana next month.
The two-day camp begins on Saturday and would have AIBA Three-Star coach Sebert Blake in charge.
Blake would be assisted by GABA Technical Director Terrence Poole and a number of other local coaches.
Boxers attending the camp are drawn from Carryl’s Gym, Essequibo Gym, Forgotten Youth Foundation, Harpy Eagles, Rose Hall Jammers and Pocket Rocket Gym.
The International Schoolboys and Juniors competition would be the first of its kind in CARICOM and is scheduled for April 29 and 30 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
It is a direct spinoff of the highly successful partnership between GABA and Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) which resulted in the birth of the DDL Under-16 competition. 2016 and marks the fifth year of the relationship between the two entities.
So far Barbados, Jamaica and St Lucia have confirmed participation to the international competition. It is expected that at least one other nation would join the list.
