BENJAMIN Mekdeci made light work of his opposition to win Category A of the Guyana Squash Association’s (GSA) Kraft Toucan Industries/DIGICEL-sponsored Junior Skill Level tournament which concluded last Sunday at the Georgetown Club courts.Playing his final game of the one-week tournament, Mekdeci, who lost a single game in the entire tournament, defeated Alec Melville in straight games 11-4, 12-10, 11-8 to be crowned champion in category ‘A’.
The other two matches contested in Category A on the final day were much closer battles as Larissa Wiltshire had to call on all her reserves to secure a hard-fought 3-1 win against Taylor Fernandes. Wiltshire won 11-3, 9-11, 12-10, 11-5 to place second while Shomari Wiltshire had to go the full five games with Alex Cheeks before finally winning 11-5, 10-12, 11-9, 3-11, 11-7 and sealing the third-place spot in the category.
In Category B, Makeda Harding finished the tournament without conceding a game as she trounced Rebecca Low 11-7, 11-6, 11-4 in her final game on Sunday.
Lowe and Collins placed second and third respectively.
Samuel Ince-Carvahal, grandson of national coach Carl Ince was finally tested in his Category C match against Gianni Carpenter. Ince-Carvahal had to call on all of his skills before winning in four very close games 7-11, 11-7, 12-10, 17-15. Michael Alphonso had a comfortable straight-set victory against Demetrius De Abreu 11-8, 11-5, 11-4 while Lucas Jonas overcame Dominic Colins in four games 11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 11-8. Carpenter, Alphonso and Jonas finished second, third and fourth respectively.
In Category D, Jason Gomes earned a hard-fought victory against the much-improved Aliyah Persaud 10-12, 11-9, 11-3, 10-12, 11-5 while Kirsten Gomes bettered Madison Fernandes 11/9, 11/4, 11/7.
In other results from Sunday’s matches, Nechemiyah Levans beat James Mekdeci 11-6, 10-12, 11-9 while Nechemiyah Levans defeatedt Nathan Rahaman 11/7, 11/8 in the two Category E matches contested.
James Mekdeci, Mohyryan Baksh and Kamir Khan placed second, third and fourth respectively.
In Category F, Mashal Allicock got the better of Chad De Abreu 5-11, 11-8, 11-0 while Mikhail Persaud trounced Liam Carpenter 11-4, 11-3. Persaud placed second and DeAbreu.
Category G action saw Teija Edwards beat Beau Fernandes 11-6, 12-14, 11-6 and Jacinta Adams defeat Geovanna Dos Santos 11-5, 11-6, But Adams was crowned champion ahead of Edwards and Beau Fernandes.
Noah Rahaman beat Grant Fernandes 11-8, 11-6 in their Category I encounter. Rahaman placed second and Maikoo third.
The Most Improved Girl award went to Abosaide Cadogan while Gianni Carpenter was adjudged the Most Improved Boy.
On the distaff side the Most Outstanding Girl award went to Harding, with Ince-Carvahal receiving the Most Outstanding Boy award.
