Guyana’s light heavyweight Desmond Amsterdam went into a slug out with Colombian Juan Carlos Carrillo and was stopped in the first round.
Amsterdam is one of two Guyanese at the games which is a prerequisite for participating in the Olympics.
The Guyanese demise was followed by a lost for St Lucian Welterweight Lyndel `The Russian’ Mercellin who dropped a points decision to Daniel Munoz of Chile.
CARICOM sister nations Jamaica and Bahamas also suffered in yesterday’s morning session. Both countries drew double blank as each of their two pugilists lost. Trinidadian heavyweight Nigel Paul was the lone winner for the region as he defeated Jean Carlos Mina of Ecuador.
Head of the St Lucian delegation in Argentina, David `Shakes’ Christopher, acknowledged that the going was tough for the Caribbean during the two days of the competition
. “The Caribbean won one fight on Friday and one today (yesterday). The going has been tough for us so far but we hope that it can change soon,” Christopher declared.
Guyana’s hope is now saddled on middleweight Dennis Thomas who comes up against Puerto Rican Jose Luis Rodriguez today. A victory would put Thomas into the quarter-final.
