AFTER almost a year on the run, Shivanand Roopnarine, accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death, was yesterday charged for the capital offence when he appeared before Magistrate Zameena Ali at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.Roopnarine of School Street, Grove, East Bank Demerara was not required to plea to the charge which alleged that on April 19, 2015, he murdered his girlfriend Alisa McPherson in Sophia, Greater Georgetown.

The 21-year-old murder accused was remanded to prison and is expected to make his next court appearance on April 28.
On Friday last, police managed to capture the accused at a check point at Mabura, Region 10 after he failed to produce a form of identification. As such, ranks became suspicious and made further checks which revealed that young man was wanted for murder.
The suspect reportedly confessed to investigators that on the night of the incident, he became annoyed after seeing his girlfriend dancing with another man.
He is alleged to have told investigators that he told her to leave the party with him but she refused so he took her to the back of the yard and stabbed her 41 times and left her to die.
The young man reportedly confessed that he threw the bloody knife over a fence.
