Santos FC, one of the ‘foundation’ football clubs in Guyana, defeated Western Tigers 2 – 1 to move atop the eight-team table of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) STAG Premier League when action continued on Saturday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground. In the opening game of the double header, Sunburst Camptown and Riddim Squad played to a 1 – 1 draw.

The game between Santos and Western Tigers was seen as the ‘battle of the undefeated’ with the two clubs enjoying a fruitful run so far in the league.

However, it was Santos who would take the three points, picking up their fourth win in as many matches, thanks to Jobe Caesar and Tyrese Forde, who scored in the 43rd and 86th minute respectively.

Dwayne Ali scored the West Ruimveldt team’s lone goal just 14 minutes into the contest that saw them picking up their first loss of the league. Western Tigers had won their three previous matches prior to the Santos defeat.

Meanwhile, after a goalless first half of entertaining football, Sunburst Camptown and Riddim Squad had to settle for shared points.

Raul Adams’ goal in the 48th minute had put Sunburst Camptown on top, but the ever dependable Amos Ramsay scored the equalizer for Riddim Squad in the 61st minute.

In the points standing, after four rounds, Santos FC sits on top with 12 points. Western Tigers with the League’s most superior goal difference is in second with nine points, the same as the Police in third.

Riddim Squad, following Saturday’s result moved to fourth with five points while Northern Rangers, though having the same points (four) as Camptown, is in fifth and the Campbellville based team in sixth place.

Flamingo is in seventh place with three points (one win, three losses) and Beacons FC is yet to get off the mark, sitting at the bottom of the table, winless after four outings.
