NOTABLE DATES

FEATHERWEIGHT `Hurricane’ Hugo Lewis improved to 2-0 with a second-round knockout of Trevor Davidson on February 26, 1995 at the Pegasus Hotel in Georgetown. The fight was a preliminary one on a card promoted by McNeal Enterprise that was headlined by a Commonwealth welterweight clash between Andrew Murray and Alain Boismenu.
The orthodox boxer had two more fights before one of his most memorable encounters. In September 1996 Lewis collided with nemesis Vincent Howard for the first time. The fight was on the under-card of a People’s Syndicate Promotion-organised event, which was headlined by a bout between Andrew `Sixhead’ Lewis and Terrence Alli.
A game `Hurricane’ was dropped early in the 10-round fight but rose with renewed vigour that surprised both Howard and the crowd on hand. The exhibition of tenacity and ring craft earned Lewis a draw although many were of the opinion that he had won easily.
He stayed away from the ring from late 1997 to 2001 and extracted revenge on Howard after winning by TKO in round 10 when the two met for the second time. A third fight was won by Split Decision.
In 2004, following a fight with Earl Deane, Lewis called it quits and to date boasts the most impressive record of a Guyanese retired boxer having not been defeated in 18 fights.
