GAIRY St Clair was 30 years old when he defended the World Boxing Organisation (WB0) featherweight title against southpaw American Shamir Reyes on February 24, 2005. The fight was held in Northbridge, Western Australia.Referee Brad Vocale stopped the bout at 44 seconds of the 12th and final round to hand St Clair his 16th stoppage in 41 fights. Two fights later the orthodox Guyanese fighter joined a small and elite group of local boxers when he won a world title.
On July 29, 2006 St Clair defeated South African Cassius Baloyi to win the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) junior lightweight titles. The event was a crowd-pleasing affair which saw Baloyi bleeding profusely from a cut over the left eye in round eight.
St Clair started his professional career in 1994 and came up against the best in the business in a career that is not yet over. His list of tough opponents includes Diego Corrales, Leonard Dorin, ‘Vicious’ Vivian Harris and Amir Khan among others. After a short stint in the USA, St Clair shifted camp to Australia in 2001.
