Stage set for Mohan Memorial Cup

THE stage is set for tomorrow’s Mohan Memorial Cup four-team Under-19 cricket tournament, set for the C-3 Park, Cotton Tree, West Bank, Berbice. The competition, which also features a fun-day, is being held as part of the efforts to resuscitate the club, which was formed in conjunction with the Hawaiian Arctic Cricket Club (HACC), based in Toronto, Canada.
Long-standing president of HACC, Narchand “Archie” Mohan is also using the occasion to commemorate the fifth death anniversary of his mother Kuntie Mohan.
HACC) was formed more than 20 years ago in Canada while the youth club was also simultaneously established at the same time at Mohan’s birth place at Cotton Tree Village, but unlike the club in Canada, the latter never fully get off the ground.
Spurred by his team’s unprecedented feats in Canada, which saw them winning the Scarborough Cricket Association (SCA) Premiere League tournament for six consecutive years, Mohan decided to resuscitate the youth club here.
The teams to be in contention are HACC under-19, Blairmont Blazers, DeEdward and West Berbice Achievers. The action starts at 10.00 am.
Several trophies and cash incentives will be up for grabs, including man-of-the-match in the final and other outstanding players and among the sponsors on board are HACC, Mohan Contracting Inc, Trophy Stall, Iqbal Construction, R&R Auto, T&M Enterprise and Jusmat Inc.
Among the players expected to be on show for the HACC under-19 team is Leonardo Seetayah who had the astonishing figures of five for four in a losing cause, playing for Cotton Tree Diehard against Blairmont Community Centre in the Elizabeth Style sponsored under-19 tournament.
On Saturday, proprietor of Trophy Stall, Ramesh Sunich handed over part of the sponsorship trophies to Mohan at his business place at South Road and Bourda Street, continuing his fine gesture of promoting sports in Guyana.
Meanwhile, the HACC team will come from: L. Seetayah, D. Samuels, A. Shewtahal, A. Khalid, Keran Arjune, Kishan Arjune, F. Gaffoor, H. Singh, A. Hemra, S. Ramah, A. Khan, R. Critchlow, M. Sibdhanny, D. Bishun, and C. Hamchandra. Manager is Nigel Seetayah, who is also the president of the club while the coach is Iqbal Alli.
