Police and youths of ‘D’ Division can now benefit from computer training with the opening of the Leonora Computer Training Centre housed at the Leonora Police Station Recreational Hall, West Coast Demerara, Monday.Gracing the ceremony was Assistant Commissioner ‘Operations’ Christopher Griffith who lauded the police crime and social prevention programme spearheaded by the Commander Stephen Mansell with support from his ranks.

Griffith, who is the third in command of the GPF, said that said the imitative will certainly empower youths as well as ranks in that division and the facility is ideal for making dreams come true in the information technology world of today.

He added that the Crime and Social Prevention programme is the brainchild of Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud and it has been well received thus far as such more of these projects should be realised, all for the benefit of youths in the community.

The senior officer told the gathering yesterday afternoon that the division has come a long way in ensuring that social programmes are in place so the youths can gain a life skill and contribute to society.

He asked that other divisions follow suit and use available places and buildings to establish facilities similar to the one commissioned at Leonora Police Station yesterday.

Griffith noted that there are changes within the GPF with the intervention of the strategic plan and they too have to be on par to serve the community by way of having educational projects to encourage youths become involved in such training.

Meanwhile, Commander of ‘D’ Division Stephen Mansell said that it is a good opportunity for ranks to become comfortable with members of the public especially youths, who can visit the station for free computer training provided by the police and an instructor from the Leonora Technical and Vocational Training Centre.

He stated that the Leonora Computer Training Centre is equipped with six internet ready computers gifted to the police by Food for the Poor last year and a six-week training commenced yesterday in which ranks will benefit from three days per week training.

The Senior Superintendent said that plans are in stream to extend the building to house 12 desk top computers and encourage both police and youths to make use of the facility.

The ribbon was cut by Assistant Commissioner Griffith after which there was a tour of the facility by other senior members of the Force and ranks.
