The event, which was organised by the Mash and Jubilee Committee and attracted a large and colourful gathering of keenly enthusiastic and patriotic residents, got off to a spirited start with a spectacular parade and ‘march past’ by ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
Taking the salute was Regional Chairman, Brentnol Ashley, who also declared the event open, while among those making presentations were religious, cultural and youth components of civil society, much to the amusement and appreciation of the cheering and excited audience.
Ashley, who also delivered the feature address, stressed the importance of this signature milestone in Guyana’s history, and called for peace and unity among the peoples of Region One.
He also urged that they live and work in harmony in order to attain great heights, and contribute to the nation’s development.

As the Region joins the rest of Guyana in reflecting on the attainment of Nationhood, and the challenges encountered and the gains achieved along the way (from 1966 to 2016), their leader urged those gathered at the event to stand up for Guyana; and to be proud and patriotic citizens who will continue to work resolutely in defence of our beloved country as “One People; One Nation; with One Destiny.”
In closing, he urged that in the coming weeks, they continue to celebrate in the spirit of the season, and make every effort to attend a Gospel
