– Hornets blow away Falcons

THE much anticipated showdown between Yamaha Caribs and University of Guyana (UG) Wolves was not short of action yesterday. However, Caribs proved a different kettle of fish to fry for the Wolves as they won 31 – 25.
The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GTT) sponsored Division One League, which continued at the National Park rugby field saw Wolves command the first half 20 – 10 as Selman Travin scored two tries and was supported by Godfrey Broomes and Osei Mackenzie who each recorded a try.
Meanwhile, O’Neil Charles and Jonike Davis accounted for a try each for Caribs. The second half, however, saw Caribs stage an unstoppable comeback as Andrew Jarvis, Akeem Fraser and Charles each scored and try and successfully converted to take them to 31 points while Robert Skeete accounted for Wolves’ only second half try.

On Saturday, Pepsi Hornets made it two-for-two when they destroyed Police Falcons 84 – 0. The inexperience of the young Police unit was once again exposed, as scoring came easily for the Hornets.
Leading the assault was winger, Blaise Bailey who used his speed down the line to score four tries while the Captain Elwin Chase scored three tries, Rickford Cummings produced three tries and two conversions and Mark Bollers pitched in with two tries.
The Police Squad fielded five new players, all inexperienced, and they were exploited for it as they were unable to stop Hornets. Tries also came from Jose Feliciana and Peabo Hamilton while Leon Greaves converted five times.
Police captain, Daniel DeAbreu stated that he is not surprised at the result since they were coming up against a side as such. And while his players are still learning the game, he said the team would have to step up their training sessions in preparation for the next game.
Hornets Captain, Elwin Chase was high in praise for the Police effort, but stated that his team is out to make a statement to all participating teams since they intend to win the League.
Pepsi Hornets opened their campaign with a come-from-behind win over Yamaha Caribs 38-20 last week while Falcons were trashed by UG Wolves 5 – 64.
Hornets’ next encounter is against UG Wolves while Police are billed to play Yamaha Caribs this weekend when play in the league continues.
