Jacob Ramsammy told the Guyana Chronicle that, moments earlier, he was with his two-year-old relative, but had advised her to go into the verandah on the lower flat of the two-storey wooden house.

He was going to the garage to remove his vehicle. Just as he reached the garage, the sound of screeching tyres got his attention, and he noticed a silver gray Mazda Axela coming from the northern direction, sliding sideways, catapulting over a six-foot-wide drain. It slammed into his five-foot-high concrete fence, dismantling a large part of the structure.

The impact of the hit sent a bolder hurling in Mr Ramsammy’s direction, forcing his to take evasive action. He later observed that the iron gate to his property was destroyed, and a house post was knocked out before the car came to a halt.

The overseas-based Guyanese said he ran to the vehicle and enquired whether anyone was injured, and the driver confirmed that he was the lone passenger and was okay.

The witness telephoned the Reliance Police Station, and ranks arrived promptly on the scene. The driver told the police that he was attempting to avoid a collision with another car which was exiting a nearby gas station when he lost control of his vehicle.

This newspaper has learnt that, at the time of the accident, the owner of the vehicle had, minutes earlier, appeared at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court to answer a charge of driving under the influence. He had sent the driver of PTT 7814 to uplift bail money when the accident occurred.

When Guyana Chronicle visited the scene, efforts were made by the driver to replace the damaged property.

Investigations are in progress.
