DEFENDING champions Chase Academy will begin their quest for a successful title defence, when they come up against Tucville Secondary, in match four on the opening day of the Milo U-20 Schools Football championship. The championship which is in its fourth year, is being administered by the Petra Organisation and will kick off tomorrow at the Ministry of Education ground.
Before the Chase Academy/Tucville at 15:30hrs, East Ruimveldt and St Winefride Secondary School will start the day’s proceedings at 11:00hrs, followed by a clash between Cummings Lodge and St Mary’s, and Dolphin Secondary and Kingston Secondary.
The annual Milo-sponsored U-20 Schools football tournament, featuring 32 high schools in Georgetown, will vie not only to dethrone defending champions Chase Academy, but also to collect the tournament’s first prize of $500 000, which will go to their school.
The schools finishing second through fourth will win $300 000, $200 000 and $100 000 respectively.
This year’s tournament will also focus on suicide prevention, with Petra Organisation teaming up with the Ministry of Health.
Dr Dennis Bassier, representing the Ministry of Health, addressed the players at the team briefing on Wednesday. He said a number of motivational quotes will be given to the captains of each team to be read shortly before the start of play.
The Petra Organisation also proposed that workshops be held with teachers of the participating schools, to deal with children who might be showing stressful tendencies.
According to Dr. Bassier, ‘Life is worth living so let us kick it together’ should be the tournament’s slogan, to shed light on an issue that every Guyanese should be concerned about.
