THE Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) on Monday expressed deep shock at the sudden death of second vice-president of the St Lucia Amateur Boxing Association (SLABA) Brian McDonald. In a statement the GBA said that it was with deep sadness and shock that it received the news of McDonald’s demise.
The veteran sports journalist died around noon on Sunday in his native St Lucia of suspected cardiac arrest. He was 43-years-old.
McDonald was in Guyana in November as part of the St Lucian team to the Caribbean Development Boxing tournament.
“The region has lost a great son who has been cut down in his prime. Mr McDonald was a staunch supporter of boxing and a fierce advocate for Caribbean unity and integration.
He was instrumental in the organisation of the Goodwill Tournament here in February 2014. His contribution to the sport both as a journalist and an administrator is unmatched and we will miss him dearly,” the GBA statement said.
In an invited comment GBA president Steve Ninvalle said that he has requested details of McDonald’s funeral arrangements from SLABA president David `Shakes’ Christopher. “Our intention is to have a representative of GABA at the funeral,” Ninvalle disclosed.
