PRESIDENT Granger has fulfilled a promise made to the people of Region 10 on his last visit, to provide transportation in whatever form to students, having difficulty attending school because of transportation issues. This promise was materialised last week when the President handed over a boat to the Regional Democratic Council to transport children living in communities down the Demerara River. The majority of the children formerly attended the Christianburg Primary School that was burnt down a few years ago. They are now experiencing difficulty attending school in Central Linden, hence, the residents of these riverine communities made a request to the Regional Chairman, who engaged the President on the issue.
The Regional Chairman posited that the boat is in the possession of the Council, but in the interim, they will be putting all systems in place to have this boat serve the residents, particularly the children of these communities for the purpose intended. The President has already distributed boats to several hinterland communities to eliminate the challenges children experience in attending schools in these rugged terrains.
He told the people of Linden that his vision is to have every child attend school and he will provide the means to make this possible.
“If they need a boat, they will get a boat, if it’s a bicycle, a bus, a truck or whatever, I will provide it because education is very important and I want every child to be in school,” Mr Granger said.
The residents of Malali and Riverview are also rallying for a school boat as they experience similar challenges and the Regional Chairman promised these residents, especially those of Riverview that they will be provided a boat in the near future to cut the daily burden of transportation cost for the children who attend school in Bartica, Region Seven.
