Pedestrian’s leg broken in two places

A road-safety-conscious security guard stood patiently under a traffic light on Church Street, between the Bank of Guyana and the National Library, last Saturday (Boxing Day) at about 14:00 hrs, and began crossing the road only after the ‘green man’ had come on.

A route 45 minibus driver on his way to the Stabroek bus park is reported to have driven through the light which had allowed for pedestrians to cross and knocked this 46-year-old security guard down.

The victim, Imran Khan of 139 Waterloo Street, Georgetown, an employee of Richard Kanhai’s, suffered two fractures to his left leg, and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he remains warded.

Khan recalled that, after he was struck down, security guards from the Bank of Guyana reported the accident to the police, who turned up soon after. He said the guards also stopped a taxi and dispatched him to the GPHC.

Khan’s step-father, Hussein Baksh, who works at the Demerara Harbour Bridge, was meantime alerted about Khan’s plight and arrived on the scene, but the guards had already dispatched the injured man to the hospital.

Khan is expressing gratitude to the security guards at the Bank of Guyana and to others who came to his rescue.

The errant driver has reportedly been arrested and charged.
