THE Guyana Police Force rugby team will sport new apparel in the new year following the donation of a number of kits by a former national player and overseas-based Guyanese. The unit on Tuesday received 13 complete kits for its rugby team, a gift of Franklyn Victor, a former Caribs player.
The presentation, which took place in the Boardroom of the Police Officers Training Centre on Camp Road and Carifesta Avenue, was part of many gestures by the former Caribs player.
Speaking at the brief ceremony, Senior Superintendent of Police and Force Training Officer Paul Williams said that the donation is very welcome.
“Uniform is one of our very critical needs. This here now, will boost us a far way because next year we are looking to expand and also to build our capacity both within the aspect of male and female rugby players. So we are very thankful and happy,” added Williams.
Williams noted that the contribution will go a very long way in terms of the team’s morale both on and off the field.
Meanwhile Victor indicated that he was always an avid sponsor of the local ruggers.
Victor added “We’ll sponsor the Guyana Police Force rugby team as much as I can. When I say we, it’s not just me, it’s a family thing; my wife and several children included and they couldn’t make it here today. We’ll do what we can do to assist rugby.”
In hearing of the Police’s drive to set up a female unit, Victor added that he is obviously going to try to facilitate uniforms for such, hinting at the possibility of jerseys for the ladies.
Meanwhile former National coach of Guyana, Sherlock ‘Solo’ Sam, said, “Going forward, we want to do some more so I hope next year that we can get some other things organised. Rugby is my life and (having) more clubs in Guyana means more players to be involved making it a bigger family.”
