Lennox Blackmore is possibly the best lightweight product to have come out of Guyana. There would be arguments against but only a few.Always disciplined and well-conditioned, Blackmoore’s name sent shivers throughout the Caribbean and further afield during the 1970s.
A master counter puncher the Cancer born was five feet nine and one half inches tall and fought out of the orthodox stance.
The former Commonwealth champion was 29 years old when he faced Dale Hernandez on November 8, 1979.
The fight was staged at the City Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska and was the first time Blackmoore engaged in combat in the USA. The Guyanese who had just creeped into the junior welterweight division, won the 10-round contest via Majority Decision, and improved his record to 20-2.
Four fights later, Blackmoore became the second Guyanese (after Patrick Ford) to challenge for a world title. He was menacingly attacked by World Boxing Association junior welterweight champion Aaron `The Hawk’ Pryor in June 1981 and lost by Technical Knock Out (TKO) in round two.
