U.S. woman fined for smuggling birds

CHIEF Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday ordered Ramjeet Singh Thakurdin, a Guyana- born United States-based citizen to pay a fine of $75,000 after she attempted to export birds out of Guyana to the United States. It was stated that last Saturday at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA , Timehri, the woman, without obtaining the necessary documents, attempted to export 18 Towa Towa birds and 29 other species. They were all concealed in hair curlers in her handbag.

After being cautioned, she accepted ownership of the birds.
Thakurdin was also disqualified by the magistrate from being granted permission for the next 12 months to transport any animals internationally.
