FORMER National Under-15 batsman Bhognarine Singh stroked a stylish century, and spinner Alex Arinda took a five-wicket haul to lead Camille’s Institute to a comfortable 62-run victory over Soesdyke Secondary in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) National Secondary Schools Cricket League (NSSCL), sponsored by Digicel and Banks DIH. Camille’s Institute posted 252 all out in 25.5 overs at Thirst Park, batting first. Singh punished all the bowlers, smashing 12 fours and eight maximums, before being dismissed for 115. The only bowler to stand out amid the destruction was leg-spinner Neeraj Khan, who took the last six wickets to fall, including the prized wicket of Singh, to end with 6-58.
In reply, Soesdyke got off to a flying start as they posted 110 for the first wicket in just 12 overs. Openers Noel Bradford and Ronaldo Blair top-scored.
However, with the introduction of Arinda in the 14th over, Camille’s Institute regained control of the match, restraining Soesdyke on 190 in 22 overs.
Arinda finished with 5-49 and he was supported by Sachin Lim who claimed 3-44.
In the West Berbice District matches, No.8 Secondary came up against Ash Secondary at the De Edward ground, won the toss and decided to bat first.
No.8 reached 303-9 from their allotted 30 overs, as Dishan Phillips top-scored with 53 which included nine fours and two sixes, while lower order batsman Chitram France contributed a valuable 40 runs laced with six fours and a six. Jamal Hemerding was the pick of the bowlers for Ash Secondary with 3-25.
The losing side never looked capable of pulling off a victory and were bundled out for just 64, giving No. 8 Secondary a 239-run victory.
Just Trevitte Carmichael and Charles Scott were able to reach double figures, scoring 13 each while Phillips returned to dominate with the ball and took 6-34 and Nigel Deodat 3-13.
The tournament continues today with three more matches; St George’s and St John’s College will clash at the Everest ground while Zeeburg will take on Sarswat and St John’s Secondary will meet Stewartville, both at the Zeeburg ground.
