Slingerz Football Club defeated Monedderlust 2 – 0 to snap the Berbicans impressive home record in the STAG Elite League when action continued at the #5 ground, West Coast Berbice.Monedderlust was up until Saturday night, undefeated at the West Coast Berbice facility, but with Slingerz FC on a mission to dominate the league, it wasn’t business as usual for Coach Gordon Brathwaite’s men.
The Vergenoegen based club was led by goals from Dexroy Adams (8th minute) and Vurlon Mills just on the stroke of half time (45+1) to pick up their fifth win of the league while Monedderlust slumped to their sixth loss.
It was a start that any club would dream of playing on the road, as Adams, from a one-time volley, just inside the 18 yards area, nicely placed the ball at the top right hand corner and way out of reach of the Monedderlust goalkeeper.
But as customary, Monedderlust as much as their present track record in the league isn’t impressive on tour, at home, they can boastfully pronounce that they were very difficult to get around.
Kevin Cottoy, regarded as the club’s best player, in the 20th minute, could’ve clawed his team back into the contest, but he was inches short from the ball that came into his path as it raced off the back for a goal kick.
Almost ten minutes later, Travis Henry also had his chance of leveling the score but his header was directed off target and went over the cross bar.
On the other end, Slingerz FC, through their forward Julian Wade had a number of chances to pull his side away in the contest, but his effort was either saved by the keeper or saw the ball going just wide off target.
Already controlling the bulk the possession and the tone of the game, Slingerz FC’s talisman and central midfield player Mills would bring the crowd to their feet with his execution of a spectacular goal.
Mills showed the Berbice crowd why he’s highly favoured on the country’s National Team – the Golden Jaguars, when he faked a defender as if he was about to let a shot loose, forcing the defender to slide by after missing on a vicious tackle.
The player known to many as ‘GQ’, then executed a step-over and ensured that the ball was on his blessed right foot and then from about 26 yards out, let loose a bomb that stunned the keeper.
So sweet was the strike that even the home side’s supporters applauded in appreciation
In the second half, nothing much changed; Slingerz still dominated but missed their easy chances.
Meanwhile, in the opening game, the Georgetown Football Club (GFC), after being hammered by Slingerz FC 5 – 0 in their previous match, bounced back to whip Buxton United 2 – 0.
With goals from Romario Welcome (4th minute) and Dellon Cadogan (28th minute), the city team picked up a crucial three points.
The win puts GFC to eight points; one less behind Buxton United (nine) who have also picked up six losses.
