Raynauth `Obeahman’ Jeffrey’s return to form paid off yesterday when when won the 4th Annual sponsored Digicel sponsored two-stage cycle road race in a winning time odf three hours 15 minutes 32 seconds .The event which attracted cyclists from several Caribbean countries was keenly contested and though Jeffrey won the first stage from the Demerara Harbour Bridge which turned back at Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo, it was the final stage from Abary, East Coast Demerara to Carifesta Avenue that the winner was decided as there were several top contenders for the top position.
During the first stage, there was a cat and mouse game going on between the country’s top cyclists on the upward journey, but on the way down, Jeffrey in company with Darren Matthews and Marlon Fisht’ Williams broke away from the others and dominated the oeroceedings.
Stage two started approximately three hours from up the East Coast and like the first stage it was a `Cat and Moue’ game with each of the top cyclists eying each other.
Jamal Eastman of Barbados attempted a break on the down ward journey but was sucked by Howard Eastman and Jamaica’s Mark Redman.
Eastman then went on a break but was caught up with going through Mahaica and the bunch came to the top of the Tropo Station on Carifesta Avenue where Orville hinds led slightly over the bunch of about 13 riders and with just under 400 metres remaining, Jeffrey pointed his wheel and that was the end of the proceedings.
Meanwhile, the local and foreign cyclists used yesterday’s race as a warm up for this week’s Tour of Guyana Five Stage road race which wheels off on Thursday.
