CITY residents are elated over the fact that once impassable roads, or in most cases inaccessible ones, are now normal thoroughfares. This new and welcome development stems from the recent and ongoing rehabilitation paving works that are bringing citizens a much-needed level of comfort.

With the countrywide cleanup efforts ongoing, the country is experiencing a fresh look and feel. Both the city and the villages are now being transformed, as residents are enthusiastically teaming up with the Task Force.
In West Ruimveldt, the residents are ecstatic about the new developments in their area. The City Clean-up Task Force, months ago, visited their area, removed debris, cleaned canals and drains, and now the Force Account Unit of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure is in their area, paving their community’s roads.
The areas recently completed by the Force Account Unit are: Gilhuys Square, Industrial Site, Crescent Street, Cactus Street, Shoppers’ Lane and Ice House Road. Rehabilitation works were also done to the West Ruimveldt front road and others.
Charles De Younge, a resident, said that the road was perfectly done. However, he has made recommendations for another speed hump to be erected, since minibus drivers drive at a fast pace on the recently paved road.
Mrs. Tanner, a Crescent Street resident, said the road was terrible and “taxi drivers did not want to come in.”

She added that persons with vehicles suffered tremendously, as the bottom of their vehicles and their tyres felt the brunt of it; but now that the road is completely paved, she is elated and satisfied with what is being done.
She explained that a community centre for the area is needed, so that persons with problems can go for counselling, and the children can have place in the afternoons to go and play.
Ms. Waveney, residing in Crescent Street for the past 50 years, explained that for the past 18 to 20 years, the area, which is a cul-de-sac, was impassable to motor traffic.
She detailed that, “I have two long-boots, one for town and one for this area, and when the rain comes, we couldn’t pass here properly…these road works here are alright, real good.”
These rehabilitation works to community roads are not restricted to Region 4. Recently, tenders were advertised for the maintenance of a number of roads in Region 6. These include Islington to Everton, Toney Street, Chesney Main Road, and Vryman’s Erven Road, along with many others. (GINA)
