Police Gymkhana extravaganza well received

IN a well-received proactive outreach to assure the public that “we are your friends”, the Guyana Police Force ‘A’ Division on Sunday staged its annual Gymkhana extravaganza, entertaining scores of civilians and colleagues at the Guyana Police Force Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.Organiser of the event, Assistant Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken said the sporting event allows the police and the public to interact on a friendly basis, while showcasing a softer side of the police.
The event, which saw bar-b-cue grills and beverage bars catering for hundreds of onlookers, was enlivened with outbursts of laughter from the crowd reacting to humorous commentaries by popular media personalities Mondale Smith and Malcolm Perriera, along with retired Superintendent of Police John Sauers, all commentators during the show.
Gymnastic displays, tug-o-war, motorcycle stunts, horse racing and musical chairs were among the range of events which saw participation by police, civilians and members of the force’s athletic club.
The event is a countrywide one with other divisions within the force staging their own Gymkhana festivities at different dates and locations, Hicken said.
It was a fun-packed five hours for those who attended the annual event, which was described by the organiser as “free and entertaining”.
